T-Rex. Triceratops. Brontosaurus. Sabre Tooth Tiger. Ground Sloth? Yep, you read that right. Tyco added one of the least frightening creatures ever to the ranks of the Ice Age cavemen in Dino Riders. To be fair, the ground sloth is a powerful creature and the Valorians have helped the prehistoric cavemen load the sloth down with weapons but in the end it’s still a ground sloth. Is this out of place beast still a good toy? Let’s find out.
Historically ground sloths were powerful and tough. They had a thick hide and massive claws. The Dino Riders Sloth also has the added advantage of laser guns and a large ice shield covering most of its backside.
The Sloth has rotating guns on each side and another on the very top in front of the rider’s perch.
The rider for the Ground Sloth is supposed to be Ulk, another dirty caveman in the tribe. unfortunately I don’t yet have Ulk so I am going to let one of my extra Valorians ride the Sloth for now. I’ll have to track down Ulk soon. Fortunately it works out ok because the standard Valorians were released in the Ice Age line as well as their Neanderthal counterparts in figure two-packs.
The Sloth can stand on his hind legs but it isn’t very useful when armored up as the seat on the harness looks towards the sky when the Sloth stands on only two legs. The Sloth looks great on all fours with the weapons and seat all pointed forward. The Sloth may not sound like a formidable beast but getting a good look at it easily changed my mind. It fits right in with it’s Ice Age brethren and is another Dino Riders toy I am glad to own.
Obviously the Sloth looks cooler with the armor and weapons but it’s a great looking beast even without the armament. It’s designed to stand upright or on all fours and has great balance even raised slightly off the front two legs (as seen in the first picture of this piece). Tyco made some great toys in this line and the Sloth may not be as exciting as the T-Rex but it’s still a great addition to Dino Riders.
