Dino Riders Styracosaurus

I’ve not brought any Dino Riders to Doom Kick in two months! I hadn’t even realized that until recently and that needs to be fixed. I was positive I had already featured the Styracosaurus on DK but when I went looking to pick a dinosaur to bring out I realized I was wrong so the Styraco gets added to the Doom Kick archives today. Ready for more armored dinos? Let’s go!

Monoclonius vs Styracosaurus

The styracosaurus is one of the smaller dinosaurs Tyco released but it’s still loaded down pretty nicely. It share a body with the Monoclonius which I also haven’t covered yet here on Doom Kick (I’ll fix that soon!). The styraco’s head is different from that of the monoclonius and it’s that head sculpt that really sets the two apart. The styracosaurus has several horns jutting out from it’s frill which makes it a more visually interesting head than the mono’s head.

The styracosaur has a simple action feature but it works well. You move the tail in one direction and the head moves in the opposite direction. It’s a feature that has been on many toys over the years but it works and doesn’t have any levers or buttons to distract from the sculpt so it’s perfectly fine with me.

The harness just clips onto the body of the dinosaur unlike most of the other dinos that use rubber bands to hold their weapons and armor. The harness clips on easy and stays in place without moving around at all.

Turret has a seat on one side of the styracosaurus and laser cannons on the other side as well as the top. Both cannons have two barrels and though they share the same design the cannon meant for the top is wider than the side cannon.

Turret himself is small and somewhat boring. He has a decent color scheme but compared to the crazy alien Rulons, all the Valorians are a little boring.

The styracosaurus is another really cool little dinosaur to add to your Dino Riders collection. It’s not one of the more expensive dinosaurs in the line but it is a good looking little dino. I think it looks really good alongside the larger torosaurus as well as paired against the Rulon monoclonius.

There has been plenty of Dino Riders pieces here on Doom Kick so if you’re in the mood to look through some great toys that deserve more attention than they receive you are in the right place.

These toys are so cool. Strategically impractical in a fight at times, but cool nonetheless.

Oh yes, very impractical but so very cool! The coolest were the most impractical.

It’s amazing to me how well thought out these toys were! It’s also shocking that these dinosaurs still look so much better than any of the Jurassic World stuff! I remember mixing these in with my Jurassic Park toys as a kid. They looked so good!

It’d be pretty cool to see Dino Riders make a return (the Imaginext stuff is definitely kind of similar) but there would most likely not be enough parts reuse to satisfy a toy company these days.

Dino Riders reused quite a bit of parts as the figures bodies and heads were reused ALOT and some of the dinos shared bodies with different heads. I’m sure even that wouldn’t be enough parts reuse to bring us a new series of Dino Riders. I wish it would come back, even if it just meant smaller dinos. I’m sure we’d never see another big one like the brontosaurus ever again.
