McDonald’s Star Trek Happy Meal – 1979

Happy Meals have been a mainstay at McDonald’s for a very long time. They go hand in hand with cartoons and movies all the time but originally they were all about promoting their own characters and brand with fairly generic themes. That all changed with Star Trek: the Motion Picture in 1979. The tale of V’Ger became the first movie tie-in McDonald’s used for their Happy Meals and Doom Kick just happens to have one of the boxes.

I actually don’t see any notice of this being called a Happy Meal anywhere on the box. There’s a large logo calling it a McDonald’s Star Trek Meal which I find fairly interesting. There were several different boxes for the Star Trek Meal but I only have this one so far and as cool as this is I’m not sure that I’ll make a collection out of it and go far all the box variations.

As is the standard, at least for Happy Meals I remember from childhood, there are multiple puzzles and games on the box. There’s also a couple of super corny jokes. You can never go wrong with horrible Klingon jokes!

There’s a few panels of a comic on one side of the box. I imagine that the story was probably continued through several boxes.

This isn’t the first McDonald’s item I’ve looked at and chances are it won’t be the last. Just last week I checked out the Super Looney Tunes Happy Meal Display.

This is gorgeous! So pristine for being almost 40 years old.

And I love the puzzle that says “The transporter is broken…”

I mean, would a broken transporter only cause the faces to swap? I’d expect there to be some “The Thing” styled monstrosities heaped together that the crew would try to kill with fire from the result of a broken transporter. Instead, there’s just some dudes hanging around with different faces. Gosh, I wish that had been a plot point on an episode of the original series.

    The transporter is broken indeed…

Haha, that would be an interesting episode. There was an episode of Voyager that comes to mind where two characters were merged into a completely new and unique character. It was kind of a deep episode.
