I love getting my hands on things just outside the norm for collectors. I’ve got a decent little collection of old food boxes and bubble bath bottles and other such items that are covered with anything from Indiana Jones to the Ninja Turtles. Though I really enjoy the older items that take me back to my childhood I also love adding new things to my collection and right now there’s some really fun stuff out there.
Cereal boxes are one of my favorite things to collect. I have several boxes from various cereals I ate as a kid. Luckily, I don’t ever have to completely grow up because there’s always a cycle of new cereals out there to try. This year we’ve got some brand new Star Wars cereal to add to your shelf of C-3PO’s. Right now there are two different boxes featuring Yoda and Darth Vader.
I’ve tried the cereal and it immediately took me back. I could be wrong but I’m almost positive this tastes very much like something I had decades ago. My mind points me towards Ghostbusters cereal. Lucky for me I’ll get to keep eating it for a while as General Mills plans four more boxes to come out over the next several months.
Second only to cereal boxes to me are soda cans. I like the older failed sodas such as Pepsi Blue and New Coke as well as those cans that are selling me on something else. Just this summer we’ve got two big nerdy movies on soda cans. Big Red has the new Terminator movie covered…
…while Dr Pepper has seven cans, each with a different character from the new Avengers movie. I’m not a big fan of Dr Pepper so I’ve drank more this summer than I have in my entire life while just trying to collect these seven cans. I finally got them all though and I can stop drinking Dr Pepper until they do something like this again.
Jurassic World was perfect for me. I loved the sense of nostalgia and being back in the same island setting as the first film was right up my alley. Dairy Queen is using the movie as their summer tie-in and though there may be zero collector desire in what is essentially their trash, I’m holding on to a few of the cups. In ten years time these will bring me back to the summer of 2015 and the first time I took my son to see a movie at the drive-in. That’s a perfect memory.
Sticking with Jurassic World, my favorite weird little thing this summer has been the Barbasol shaving cream cans. These are just so off the wall but make perfect sense at the same time. What’s not to love about dinosaurs on your shaving cream? Dennis Nedry, eat your heart out!
What have you seen out there that you’ve brought home? Star Wars mac & cheese? Avengers granola bars? Sometimes it can be fun to be a part of a big corporation’s marketing schemes.
