Vintage TMNT Tokka and Rahzar

The original TMNT movie was a big deal and the success of the turtles on the big screen, the small screen and the toy aisle pretty much guaranteed a huge sequel. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze was released in 1991. I’m not sure if it’s as loved as the original movie but I always enjoyed it and even though we didn’t get Bebop and Rocksteady we were still given two new evil mutants to help aid the returning Shredder against the turtles; Tokka and Rahzar.

Playmates got a pretty easy pass for Tokka, the mutant snapping turtle. A big part of Tokka’s figure was reused from Slash but that’s not a bad thing. I’ve always loved that Slash figure and Tokka is another great evil turtle who fits the mold well. There are enough new parts to make him look distinct and he really does represent his on screen counterpart.

Rahzar, a mutant wolf, was completely new and pairs up great with Tokka. Both of these figures are cartoony enough to fit in with the rest of the Playmates TMNT toys but they are also less goofy than some of their fellow figures. There’s plenty of detail for the time but there’s no sculpted on gross bits like worms or trash that some other figures featured. Normally Rahzar had black paint apps on his nose and around his eyes. I’m not sure if mine somehow made it through with those applications being missed or if there was an official change somewhere down the line.

Tokka and Rahzar might have been a second rate Bebop and Rocksteady but I came to like them and I love their figures. We did finally get Bebop and Rocksteady in the 2016 film and I think they turned out fairly well . Maybe we’ll eventually get Tokka and Rahzar in the new movies sometime down the line.
